Floyd's HR in ninth carries Rays past ChiSox

Baseball Betting Lines

05/30/2008 - St. Petersburg, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Cliff Floyd led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a game-winning home run as Tampa Bay edged the Chicago White Sox, 2-1, in the second test of a four-game set at Tropicana Field.

Floyd greeted Scott Linebrink (2-1) by driving an 0-1 fastball over the wall in right-center for his fourth home run of the year. The long ball ended a stretch in which the ChiSox bullpen had not allowed an earned run in 28 innings pitched.

"It was just one pitch thrown in the wrong spot," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "That's part of the game."

B.J. Upton added an RBI single for the AL East-leading Rays, who have won two of their past three games. Akinori Iwamura finished 2-for-4 with a run scored as the Rays won for the 18th time in their last 21 home games.

"It was a well played game," said Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We pitched great and we got just enough offense to win."

James Shields started on the hill and allowed just one run on seven hits, while walking one and fanning six in six innings. Dan Wheeler (1-3) earned the win with a scoreless ninth.

Alexei Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a solo homer for the White Sox, who won the series opener 5-1. Jermaine Dye finished 2-for-3 with a double.

Jose Contreras surrendered just one run on five hits in seven innings for Chicago.

The Rays went on top with a run in the third. Iwamura slapped a two-out single up the middle, advanced into scoring position when Carl Crawford walked and came around to score after Upton ripped a single to left.

The White Sox finally got to Shields and deadlocked things in the fifth when Ramirez belted a one-out to left, his second of the year.

Pitching dominated from there as Al Reyes, J.P. Howell and Wheeler each threw a scoreless inning for the Rays, while Contreras and Matt Thornton kept the Rays at bay until Floyd touched Linebrink for the game-winner in the ninth.

Game Notes

White Sox shortstop Orlando Cabrera recorded his 1,500th career hit when he singled in the third inning...Contreras has never lost to the Rays, compiling a perfect 5-0 record in eight starts and one relief appearance...Despite the loss, Chicago has won nine of its last 12 versus the Rays and gone 7-2 in St. Petersburg during that time.
